This is a really odd one, isn't it?

Was the wiring recently worked on or modified? It sounds to me like someone accidentally wired two separate 110 volt "legs" into one line somewhere. The result would be that everything in that circuit would be getting 220 volt power instead of 110 resulting in fried appliances.
