Explain vampire diaries?

Well, i would tell you everything but the books are absolutely nothing like the show. I have read all of the books and the story line is 99.9% different. The only thing that's the same is the characters names... and even that's not true because they didn't even use one of the main character and threw in a thousand new ones... so i guess you will just have to watch the show to find out.. sorry!
